Shanel Y. Robinson is a U.S. Air Force veteran, public servant, and community advocate dedicated to delivering strong, compassionate leadership for New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District. A proud Avionics Specialist and Flight Leader, Shanel credits her military service with shaping her core values of discipline, integrity, and commitment to others, principles that continue to guide her work in public office. 

Shanel made history as the first Black woman to serve as Somerset County Commissioner Director. As Director, she champions priorities in public health, infrastructure, mental health services, economic development, historic preservation, and public safety. She also serves as President of the New Jersey Association of Counties and sits on statewide boards that advance planning, diversity, housing, and community well-being. 

Before joining the Board of County Commissioners, Shanel served on the Franklin Township Council and later as Deputy Mayor. There, she championed youth programs, senior support, community engagement, and accessible services for working families.  

Grounded in her mission to be “an advocate, an ally, and a voice for the people, no matter the zip code” Shanel’s priorities include affordability, expanding access to healthcare, strengthening small businesses, workforce development, supporting mental health, public safety, investing in education, and rebuilding critical infrastructure. 

Her lifelong commitment to service extends beyond government. Shanel is active in The Links, Inc., the Somerset County Democratic Black Caucus, the JFK Democratic Club, and several faith-based and youth-focused organizations. Her leadership has earned statewide recognition, including the NAACP Political Action Award, the MLK Jr. Leadership Award, and the Eleanor Roosevelt Award. 

As a grandmother, Shanel is driven by the future we are creating for the next generation. She brings a veteran’s discipline, a public servant’s heart, and a community advocate’s dedication to everything she does.
